NGNV Wednesday Fuck the World Mix

I haven't posted shit here in forever because fuck it, that's why. So, that's the name of this mixtape. Anyways, all apologies but I was feeling all motorhead d-beat inspired today, which lead me to listening to a bunch of shit that lead me to listening to a bunch of other shit, which lead me to throwing this all together in no particular order.

I got some other shit coming soon, and it'll be big, it's just taking a while. Enjoy.

Surf Grind

It's no secret that I'm still a surfer at heart. But when I'm surfing, the last thing going through my mind is two-beat poppunk or shitty indie electrogarbage. I got a little GoPro video camera and took it out for a surf the day after a big storm. Waves were awful and the water was cold. Perfect day to try out a new video camera!

Surfer is me, music is Magrudergrind.

Deafheaven signs to Deathwish

BrooklynVegan Presents: Deafheaven - Violet (edit) from Roads To Judah by brooklynvegan

I really don't like Converge or most bands on Deathwish, but this band rips. American Black Metal from SF. Why the fuck are they on Deathwish? Who knows. What I do know is that they have a demo floating around. This track is from their Roads to Judah LP.

Stroking the "NYC Sucks" Comps

Fuck me. Well I realized a sad thing has finally come to pass- I started reading people's blogs who aren't my friends. I know, it's terrible. It's like a gateway drug. Soon enough I'll figure out how to work an RSS feed and then I'm totally face fucked. I blame my increased computer usage on Japan. I have to make all these reports now and watch banned TV online. Wah wah wahhh!

Well one good thing can come of all this before I'm a complete shut-in otaku type who eventually commits suicide; I found these pretty cool comps on metalsucks.net of NYC metal bands. Actually they just released VOL 2 today. I'm all for guilt-free and free-free downloading, not to mention promoting young guns. I haven't had the chance to listen to it yet, but I know about half of the bands from seeing them live or playing shows with them and a few are friends of mine & the NGNV crew. Crank it to 11 and then go see them live!

Pg. 99 Reunites to Play Doc. #8

I missed out on seeing this band live. I was willing to drive from Indiana to DC for their last show, but couldn't find anyone who wanted to go. From what I heard, it was a packed bunch of kids in some barn in Virginia or something. Well, they're playing Best Friend's Day this year, and I think it'd be cool to see them.

I also think Doc. #8 isn't thier best record. However, I'd be willing to go down to Richmond for A) the biscuits and gravy at the 821 cafe and 2) seeing a bunch of emo kids rolling around on the ground.

I just hope they can corral the band so the show starts on time. There's something like 10 people in this group.

Anti Cimex Lives... On Film!

Fuck me man, sometimes I get sent the best shit ever. Just got this from 138 over in Sweden. It's a little movie from 1985 of Anti-Cimex just kinda, doing shit. Awesome footage of them practicing, playing gigs, taking bubble baths, shopping a the leather daddy store, etc. You know, punk stuff. Anyways it's pretty fucking epic, thanks for that 138. Check his site out at Can't Hate Enough. It's all in gobbledygook foreignspeak though...

Downsided - Demo 2011

I got this sent in by Sean from Boise ID, with this email:

Sean:You probably get this shit all the time, and I really don't give a shit if you don't end up posting it or whatever, but I thought it'd be good to let you know. I'm in a hardcore punk band from Boise, ID called Downsided. We started about six months ago, we've played a number of shows, and now we have a demo up for download. If you wanna get around to checking it out, that'd be rad.

Well Sean, your not giving a fuck seems to have worked my friend. Because here's me giving a fuck and posting it. Well, maybe it was a combo of your not giving a fuck, me actually being on top of my shit for the first time in fucking months, and this demo not being a complete fucking turd. In fact, I'd even give this the "pretty fucking good for a demo" seal of approval. Go out and get this shit mixed and mastered and you've got a great start to a full length.

Long and short, this is definitely some hardcore shit for sure. Definitely thrashy, dipping in to some Power Violence moments but still solidly punk rock. Excellent pit music, I'd see em for sure.

For fucks sake man, lay down a full length.

Devil - Magister Mundi Xum EP

Because Prolly gave us shit for posting a bunch of "shit from 2010" and then made fun of ME for posting Ghost (that was totally Blake man...) he said we could redeem ourselves by posting this Norwegian Witchfinder General knockoff called Devil.

Well Prolly, it's good. Rarely do I get to use the term knockoff as a compliment, but when you pull off WG as well as these dudes do, I'd say it's a good thing. Nothing new here folks, just old school doom metal?NWOBHM played by younger fellas. Whatever the fuck these dudes, Witchcraft, and all those cats are drinking up in Northland, it's keeping shit slow. Keep imbibing it fuckers.

All Pigs Must Die - All Pigs Must Die EP

Every once in a while, Brooklyn does something other than give the NY Times some hackneyed ass shit to discover. Like when they spew forth a band like All Pigs Must Die (Henceforth, APMD, cuz that shit's long to type.) I have no real idea who these dudes are, but, apparently, they're from brooklyn, they include Ben from Converge/Acid Tiger, and they play that weird ass metal punk crust hybrid I dig so hard. Shit's pretty fucking solid. If you like Black Breath, you'll like this. Cuz' the drummer's better. And they play faster. But they're not quite as catchy. But they're definitely hardcore as fuck.

Right anyways, fuzzy, fast, loud, hardcore, metal, punk, shit. Good. Getsum. You've probably already got it though cause we at NGNV pride ourselves on being like 4-5 months to 35 years behind the times. Fuckit man.

Crucifyre- Infernal Earthly Divine

Pretty good black thrash my buddy Christauf tipped me off to recently. No doubt his knowledge of this band has to do with it's pedigree with former members from bands such as Nasum, Morbid, and General Surgery. With an album title that gay, you know this band wouldn't even be a blip on the radar if they weren't from Sweden. A promising first album. I'm looking forward to see where they go from here.

Deafheaven - Demo 2010

Deafheaven are one part mid 90's PV hardcore (Clikitat Ikatowi, Angel Hair) and one part Black Metal. It's just a demo, so I've got high expectations for their full length.

Ghost - Opus Eponymous

I feel weird listening to this album. It's cheesy, clean and extremely calculated. But for some reason, I have no problem with it. It's strangely addicting. My buddy who turned me on to them feels that the lyrics are subliminally forcing me to enjoy it. Satan is all up in my brain!

EDITORS NOTE: Ghost's corporate ass, limpdick nonmetal sound is apparently backed by equally corporate ass, limpdick nonmetal lawyers and they took the link off mediafire for us. Thanks for saving me the trouble you thindick fucks.

Coffinworm

Taking advantage of the current snow-pacolypse and in attempt to get my shit together and "accomplish something", here's my first unholy contribution to NG, NV. It seems appropriate to start things off with a band from my hometown, Indianapolis. Between the five of the them, the Coffinworm dudes have most likely had a hand in anything heavy, brutal and awesome coming out of Indiana over the last 10-15 years. Every description of the band I've seen so far has included the words "black" "death" "doom" and "metal" so I'll let you all draw your own conclusions as to their musical stylings. Anyway, here's a song from "When All Became None" (2010), and behold their works, ye Mighty, and despair.

If you happen to be in the Midwest around March 6, they'll be playing with Thou and Overpower at the Dojo, a show so good that you'd probably go blind and deaf if you attended.

Alpinist - minus.mensch

The Duggernaut forwarded me this one with the tagline, "You copy their riffs and you don't even know them yet." Frankly, that's good nuff for me. Solid new school crust from Germany. Heavy on the PNW sound without being boring. A nice way to gnar the day.

Pentagram, Hull, Bezoar, Judas Priestess @ Europa, Jan 6th, 2011

Pentagram are gods. This much is a given. They're just one of those unfukwittable things in life. Like loudly farting in a crowded library or beer for breakfast, they're always the right choice. More on them later though.

So I haven't been to many shows lately, one here or there, but hardly the number I was hitting 6 months ago. Anyways, many moons ago, my buddy Tyler of Bezoar/the Levee fame told me that he was opening up for Pentagram at Europa in January. I, of course, was fucking stoked for him because Bezoar is one of the best bands around Brooklyn right now and they totally fit that bill. On top of that, he mentioned that perennial favorites and excellent all around dudes Hull would also be on the bill. A fucking success before it even starts.

So I showed up nice and early to catch Bezoars set. Well. Fucking. Worth it. Everytime I see that band they get just a little weirder, just a little heavier, and just a little better. Straight stonerdoom morons, maybe sit this one out. This band involves though, and the ability to deal with a solo and some psyche. Now for the rest of us who can handle big boy/girl music, get this fucking album and see them live. Sarah's vox are eerie and evil as fuck, Tyler has some of the best tone in the city, and the new drummer Justin(?) totally gave the band new life. He's fucking heavy. 'Nuff Said.

Next on was Judas Priestess. They're good. They cover Judas Priest and they're all ladies. I'm sure plenny has been written about them elsewhere so I'm gonna move on.

After that, Hull. This band will be remembered in the future. Mark my fucking words people. They're one of the few bands out there tight enough to exist as a 5 piece with 5 singers and 3 guitars, claim having an awful night, and still have the entire audience raving like fucking lunatics at the end of their set. Fuck it, they're heavy enough to blow the power out of my old house, they're heavy enough to blow your fucking mind. Got it? Good. Go see Hull. Now. Asap. Stat.

Finally, Pentagram. Now, despite the fact that I truly believe in the unholy, unquestionable power of this band, I've seen them not at their best in the past. Every once in a while the sound just isn't up to par, the crowds fucking lame, Bobby's nodding off in a smack induced haze, etc. Whatever the excuse, they're not 100% reliable live.

This was not one of those shows. Easily the best I've ever seen them. Europa was a perfect fit for the crowd, the band, the vibe, just everything. Not too big or small, the sound was absolutely fucking killer, and they were tighter than a nun's cunt. Their tone was dialed, their set was on fucking point hitting a good mix of old and new, and Bobby was a fucking wildman. Now that shit, was a blast. If you missed em then, find them soon.

Top 5 Records of 2010

Following in the footsteps of Thom, I'm going to post some of my favorite records from 2010. However, since I am an underachiever, I am only going to post my top 5

1. Forgetters - 2x7"
This record is some great punk rock. Great lyrics and awesome melodies, this is by far one of my favorite records to come out this past year. They're playing the cake shop this saturday (1/8) so you best get to the show.

2. Kingdom - Helmetraan
I can't stop listening to this droney shit. Check out my earlier post for a clip.

3. RVIVR - Life Moves 7"
Pop punk from Olympia that reminds me of J Church. They played a great show here in Brooklyn at Lulu's and man, did people get into it. I sure hope they stop by here again

4. Inter Arma - Sundown
RVA metal hardcore that is fucking brutal. Great record with a ton of really interesting influences.

5. The Estranged - Subliminal Man LP
I like this band. They remind me of the Cure and the Wipers. I reckon they also got the drummer from Hellshock to take downers so he could play the drums all punk-goth tempo.

Skuld's Top 10 albums of 2010

Everyone does these top 10 year-end deals, and so here's mine. The difference here is I could care less about new [read: current] music let alone new bands. If I hear about something new that sounds interesting, fine, but I'm certainly not pulling my hair out over this list. I don't really care what anyone thinks, this is just what I've actually been listening to that came out in the last year. And don't come to me complaining about how it's mostly just black metal or there's some Nazi on the list cause I just don't care.

A couple albums are late-comers to my ears, but I'm definitely not polishing apples here. I also want to make a special mention for Forbidden's comeback album. Not as good as Sacrifice's comeback in '09, but a thrasher nonetheless. Jack will probably hate me for excluding Electric Wizard, and while I like it a lot more than any of their other albums (I actually own 2 CD's of theirs), I can't honestly say it's my jam or that I've been playing it much. On that note, I'd like to see what everyone in the NGNV crew would say and where our tastes overlap. So guys if you're reading this and don't like it, make your own goddamn list!

In no particular order:

Skyforger- Kurbads

The Batallion- Head Up High

Darkthrone- Circle The Wagons

Burzum- Belus

Sigh- Scenes From Hell

Triptykon- Eparistera Daimones

1349- Demonior

Black Breath- Heavy Breathing

Enslaved- Axioma Ethica Odini

Forbidden- Omega Wave

Shoulda-coulda-woulda's

Here's a consolation prize list of bands who made albums this year that may actually prove to be better over time but didn't make the list cause either I didn't listen to them much, it didn't make the cut, or I didn't actually listen to it but will probably get around to it sooner or later.

Electric Wizard

Melvins

Nails

High On Fire

Overkill

Immolation

Atheist

Charred Walls Of The Damned

Blind Guardian

Decrepit Birth

Intestine Baalism- Ultimate Instinct

I just saw this band last night at Koiwa Death Fest. I'd been waiting this whole year living in Tokyo for a chance to catch them live and they did not disappoint. Intestine Baalism are a melodic death metal band from Tokyo. I've been following them for some years now and even though they are pretty obscure, I came across them long before other better known Japanese bands like Gauze or Disclose. Melodic death metal is a hard sell to most, and to be honest my first impression of them was death metal meets DanceDance Revolution. But that's just what happens when you have such an original amalgamation of sound- you struggle to equate it to something familiar which it is not. On the other hand, they're not the typical weird for weird's sake Japanese band.

Although they didn't have shirts or patches at the merch table, I got my hands on a limited press (300 copies) LP of Ultimate Instinct. "Banquet In The Darkness" was the first album I heard from them and it was a favorite for a long time, but I have to say they really perfected their craft on this release. The album shreds from start to finish- the riffs are very memorable and overall the songwriting is really solid. I got to meet the brains behind the madness, Seiji Kakuzaki after the show. Speaking with him gave me a sense for why this band is so hard to see or get information. He was very modest and reserved. The slow output and obscurity has nothing to do with elitism or trying to be cool and underground, but everything to do with his humble sensibilities. Anyways, check out the album, and try to see them or support them however you can.

Autistic Youth

Sometimes you want to listen to melodic downbeat punk. Not cause you're necessarily bummed out, but sometimes you just want to fulfill your uppage of punx quota of the day.

Yeah, that was fucking awful.

Anyway, this is Autistic Youth. My friend Lisa told me about them when we were hanging out in Austin for Chaos over the summer. She said they were great and I should totally check them out. I'm really glad I did. I'm also really glad that I had the good sense not to pee on Lisa when she passed out in our hotel bathroom, sitting on the toliet with her head resting in the shower curtain. Fuck, people from Portland know how to goddamn party.

AY are doing the throwback to early 80s punk like the Adolescents or their hometown dudes, the Wipers. Check it:

The Secret - Solve Et Coagula

The Secret - Solve Et Coagula

I know Jack might hate it, but fuck it. This is a great record. Has a black metal vibe with notes of Trap Them and Converge. Dark, dirty and fast. Perfect.

The Batallion - Head Up High

It's been a minute since this album dropped, but believe you me that I was trollin the nets for a leak. I can't tell you how stoked on this band I am. But like any good band, a few listens wouldn't do and I needed time to mull it over.

First off, how is it that everyone and their mother has heard of similar sounding bands like Inepsy (I mean Canada, really?), but every time I mention The Batallion I'm met with blank stares? Here's a Norwegian band that despite their credentials, seem to slide in under the radar and get almost no attention. You got guys from Old Funeral (!), Taake, and Borknagar among others. Now if you haven't heard all those bands, you need to go back to school and do your homework! This is a real super group if there ever was one. Born and bred black metalers, they've totally abandoned the scene (which gets stale by the minute) and traded in their chips for a more pure heavy metal Motorhead-worshipping sound. There are few bands who are able to recapture this sound without sounding like a cheesy caricature or totally disposable and redundant.

The thing you gotta love about super groups is their propensity to not give a fuck-all about what anyone thinks. They've been through the mill and have seen some shit. The fact that these veterans are still standing is a thing in of itself and a good super group knows not to devolve into a wank-fest circle jerk. Enter Head Up High's first track "Watch My Step"- the official middle finger in your face. It sets the tone for the whole album with a "Bang your head or get the fuck outta the way!" They know it's a sophomore album and people usually sweat that kinda thing, but they seem to not give a fuck about what anyone thinks. I like that in a band. I can't say this album's as good as their instant classic of a debut Stronghold Of Men, but it's definitely up there and there's something new I hear on each listen so far. Check them both out and decide for yourself.

I know a lot of people are cumming all over the place over this band, but they're right. It's fucking great. Pissed loud and heavy.

Danava - Unonou 2008

Danava - Unonou

I saw Danava years ago in LA with Glass Candy. Their live show completely blew me away. Loud, riffy, spacey and weird. Weird is an understatement. At the time they didn't have much recorded, so I grabbed an LP of their previous endevour called Princess Sweepstakes. So when a rip of Danava's full length started rotating the nets, I had to put it up.

In short, it's proggy stoner metal. The kinda shit you wanna listen to while driving a T-Bird through the desert.

Kingdom

This is Kingdom with a song from their new record Hemeltraan. Someone should help me pronounce that. The record is decent from start to finish. Slow, droney metal that seems to be the talk of the town these days. I usually listen to this type of music while reading. It provides the atmosphere of a really, really, slow day and all you want to do is relax...

This video is weird.
