The Accüsed - The Curse Of Martha Splatterhead

Sticking with the theme of new albums by formerly amazing bands that are good but not mindblowing, here's the new one from the Accüsed. "The Curse of Martha Splatterhead" (seeing a theme here?) features original guitarist Tom Niemeyer and a bunch of other PNW rockers (none original) playing the same brand of crossover thrash you've come to expect, just with better production and a glaring lack of Blaine Cook/Fart on vocals. The riffs are pretty solid, the songs definitely get a nod, and everything is pretty good. It's just not "Return of" or "More Fun" nawh'mean? Anyways, I enjoyed it. Wasn't mindblown but definitely didn't ruin my day.

Bazillion Points Demo Blog/I have no fucking cred

Ok so I know I've posted about it before but fuck man, the deeper you get in to Ian Christe's demo blog the better your life gets. Like 100%. If I was a lazier sack of shit I'd basically skip out on doing this blog and link to his shit every time he posts something new. But I'm not that guy. But seriously, I've downloaded, and listened to everything on there and it's way better than anything I will ever be able to break here give or take some local touring band demo tapes and possibly that Metalian demo. Crossover, early death metal, speed, thrash, grind, you name it.

Fuck, go right now and download Beyond Possession, Infernal Death, Demonax, Pap Smear, and Noxious. Go. Now. Fucking do it.

Report back later.

Corrosion of Conformity - Animosity

The first album I ever posted on this blog was COC's Technocracy. That shit kills it. Now, after a few month of listening to COC every couple of days I feel it's necessary to post up their 2nd full length, Animosity. If you think Technocracy is rad, Animosity will fuck your ears with vigor. Before COC morphed in to a southern rock groove metal band, they played some furious, no bullshit hardcore. As pioneers of crossover they definitely leaned towards the more metallic side of things, but on Animosity, it's mostly a punk rock band still. In a way, they almost have an Age of Quarrel Cro-Mags meets Black Flag with Sabbath breakdowns. Throw in some super political lyrics and some of the shittiest punks-playing-thrash solos you've ever heard and you've got a pretty good pedigree for this record. COC makes me wanna drop in, thrash on, and tune out.

Cro-Mags - Before the Quarrel

Finally back to the business at hand. Music. Ahhh.
For your kick off to the week I offer up "Before the Quarrel" by the Cro-Mags. This isn't technically an "album" so much as a collection of the demos for the classic "Age of Quarrel." Though it may be blasphemous to say, I think I like this more than AOQ... well, at points. BTQ is a pretty awesome snapshot of the Mags completely off the leash. The recording is raw as hell, the band is a little looser, a little faster, and a little rougher around the edges. What really makes it for me though is that JJ sounds completely at the end of his rope. Just unhinged all the way and on full tilt. AB the BTQ version of "World Peace", "Malfunction", or "Signs of the Time" with the AOQ version and you'll really hear what I mean. AOQ is amazing and set the tone for the beginnings of crossover and NYHC but compared to a lot of BTQ it sounds genuinely overproduced (hard to fucking believe).

I'm not really sure why but for some reason I hear a lot of euro-punk discharge/oi influence in here. Might be the singalong choruses or something.

Take a listen, hell take 10. The minute "World Peace" hit I was a convert.

Hirax - Raging Violence

When it comes to Thrash, there's just way too many bands. If someone was to compile a complete list of every asshat hesher's thrash band started from 1985-1990 it would probably reach to fucking mars and back or something. That being said, some bands just stand way the fuck out from all the others. Hirax definitely stands way the hell out.

Totally underrated at the time, these dudes slay the craziest übershort hardcore length/speed song with the ridiculous King Diamond ups and downs and the thrashing mad guitar solo action. Oh yeah, their album art fucking kills it. Pushead at his best.

Check this shit out if you're into the fastest thrash ever.

The Accüsed - The Return of Martha Splatterhead

The Accüsed - The Return of Martha Splatterhead
OK so I promised yesterday that I'd get you all some more info on this album. The Accüsed (yes you need the umlaut you dicks) were a crossover band from Seattle in the 80's/90's who played some blazingly fast, super gnarly high speed thrashy hardcore. Pretty much all of their songs are about dead things, murder, sex, drugs, alienation, or having sex for money. Yeah so they were like 16 or something when they started... Yet even at as these impressionable youths were shredding the shit harder than anyone else around.

"The Return of Martha Splatterhead" is their first full length (the original "Martha Splatterhead" being an EP) and basically showcases their hardcore-gone-thrash approach. Hell you can even hear some total Discharge ripoff shit in there on "Buried Alive." Scope out "Wrong Side of the Grave" too for the best line to say when you show up to work hungover as fuck and not wanting to talk to anyone.

Put this shit on and go skate or something.
