Led to the Grave - S/T

I met the guitar player for this band at the Skeletonwitch/Cannabis Corpse show a few weeks back. He threw me the cd and was a generally nice dude (even if he was from MA. We all have our faults.) I just found it in my bag a few days ago and took a listen. Not bad, not bad at all. Good old fashioned thrashy shit played by not old people. Actually, it's pretty fucking catchy. I'll post the album artwork later, I don't got a scanner on me right now.

Led to the Grave

Amebix/Kylesa Review

Holy fuck. That was unreal.

Sorry about the slow day/lack of detail. I'm currently in a world of fucking pain from Tombs/Kylesa and kylesa/amebix back to back + stacking super hard on my bike. Something more substantial will come out of this later.

EDIT: Right so it's later and now that I've had nigh on a week to process what I witnessed I think I can write some more about it. The Atakke/Thought Crime/Kylesa/Amebix show will definitely go down as one of the best shows of the year if not my life. Every aspect of this show came off flawlessly in a show that could have gone so horribly, horribly wrong (read: fat old ex-crusties digging out their old vests and slogging desperately through songs they don't remember to a crowd aghast at the patheticness...)

Anyways, I don't think I've ever been part of a crowd that was more stoked to be at a show in my life. Seeing a room of hundreds of people all in black, mostly denim, mostly covered in patches, all grinning from ear is truly a site to behold. Hell I even saw the dudes in Atakke smiling. It was that good.

I missed Atakke but Though Crime and Kylesa were great as well. It was definitely visible this wasn't any old show for the guys in thought crime. They were totally on top of their game and the sound was fucking killer. Todd looked like a little fucking kid he was so stoked to be onstage with Amebix. Kylesa just looked happy not to be being trampled like they were at the Charleston the night before, accordingly they sounded killer.

When Amebix came out it was madness. Instead of the fat old squatpunks I was expecting it was three, very well preserved, semi-goth looking dudes who had no pretension, brought no bullshit, and threw down nothing but the best. They played fucking everything the crowd wanted to hear, they played it well, and for real it sounded better than on the albums. I've now officially had Axeman and Chain Reaction stuck in my head for a week straight. These dudes know how to put on a show and I sincerely thank Roy Mayorga (who fucking killed it all night on the drums/samples) for convincing them to finally come to the states. Dudes, even the fucking backdrops eye's lit up! How sweet is that shit?

After the show I got to meet Rob and Stig for a minute while they were getting some beers. Two of the nicest guys I've ever shook hands with.

Long story short, it was everything I hoped for and more. Call me a shill or a panderer or whatever, I don't give a fuck, Amebix fucking kills it.

Here's some pics by Ralphy from that night. Ralphy's Pictures Apparently brooklyn vegan also took some.

IT WAS HIM ALL ALONG! He was the angry norseman! Just watch. Watch... and know...

A moment of Steele

So my friend Sarah is the one who sent me that moshing germans picture and the metal band name flow chart shot. I've decided (by way of her telling me that I've decided) to give her a weekly photo spot. This week's shot is a response to the previously posted black metal blog post thing.

FUCKING AMEBIX TONIGHT

Fuck damn shit hell am I stoked. If anyone who reads this and doesn't know me is coming lemme know how to find you.

If Kylesa is half as good tonight as they were last night it's going to be one murderous fucking evening.

Why We Keep Sweden Around

My friend just forwarded me this blog post of some crazy ass Swedish black metaler. Enjoy.

Kylesa - Kylesa, To Walk a Middle Course, Time Will Fuse Its Worth

Ok since I'm going to attempt to see Kylesa twice, possibly three times this week I figure I should post one album for each attempt. I'm dying to see how the fuck they're gonna fit 2 drumsets and all those amps into the asshole of the death that is the Charleston's basement. This is gonna be fucking hysterial to behold.

Anyways, Kylesa's pretty hard to pinpoint but it roughly falls under the category of super heavy doom/sludge with hardcore/punk influences. Aka it's good old fashioned heavy as fuck metal played by dudes formerly in grindcore bands with 2 drummers and 3 vocalists (2 male 1 female). All bases covered.

Kylesa - Kylesa, To Walk a Middle Course, Time Will Fuse Its Worth

Mmmm... so few hours of waiting

Until this happens tonight

FREE DOOM MP3's & K666 Radio online - HOLY SHIT!

So apparently www.stonerrock.com has a fucking radio station. Being the dim bulb I am I just figured this out yesterday. It's unsurprisingly really fucking good if you're in to stoner rock/doom shit. So far I've seen Karp, Rev. Bizarre, Ufomammut, some really weird Jimi Hendrix, Yob, Fu Manchu, etc. roll across the reels. Check this shit out, it's awesome for the snowy/rainy/gray kinda day we got going on in NYC today.

EDIT UPDATE: Yo check this shit out! They also have a section with like infinity free fucking stoner/doom/sludge mp3's! This shit rules!

Inepsy - R'n'R Babylon

I know everyone and their mom has been hyping this band as the new d-beat Motorhead and how they're so good and shit, so let me just say this one thing. Fuck it, they're all right. Count me officially on the Inepsy bandwagon. This shit rules. It really is some solid Motörhead style crusty rock'n'roll. Oh yeah, and they do a mean fucking cover of the Trooper. Can't really ask for anything more than that can ya?

Hellbastard - Heading For Internal Darkness

The best album from the first self-described crust band out of the UK. Heavy ass old school crust/punk/metal goodness in the vein of a gnarlier Amebix. Thanks to punknotprofit for this one. I've been jonesing for a while.

Goddamn am I stoked for Amebix on Thursday.

Unholy Hell, When Does it End?

HOLY FUCKING SHIT! PENTAGRAM IN NYC!

If you wanna meet me I'll be there. With a Pentagram patch on.

Neurosis - Given To The Rising

This one's for Thomas from the Sleepies (see previous post, probably on 1st page for deviously fucking insidiously catchy album d/l). Last night in the worlds most crowded asshole bar where I came nigh on slaughtering the people in the way of my beer consumption, Thomas and I got to talking about Metal, and how even as someone who has no fucking clue about the first thing about metal he can still get behind the fucking Melvins. I, as someone who enjoys the fuck out of some Melvins got behind that statement and had to back it up by saying that perhaps his first hit was good, but maybe he should up the fucking ante and step in to some Neurosis.

Neurosis is perfect. It's got the hardcore roots that a punk like myself demands and the massive, spinewrenching, skullcrushing, bowel emptying riffage a doom fan desires, and then some weird ambient shit for everyone else. Basically they are fucking unstoppable. Thomas, here's the new album I was telling you about. Give it a shot.

Neurosis - Given to the Rising

Everyday I Get a Little Bit Closer

To becoming this dude...

Nanda Devi - Sludgefuckedintheear shit of the day

Yo just found out about this band Nanda Devi outta Portland (wow a doom band from the PNW, who the fuck woulda guessed?). Superheavy sludge with a damn good riff holding it all down. Occasionally gets not-quite "ambient" but definitely has a good solid/on off. If you're into the Eyehategod vox with a little heavier groove check this out.

Prollyisnotprobably + Antischism = Fucking Killer

So as you may or may not have noticed, there are some links to other blogs on the right side of this meagre ass looking page. One of those is is Prollyisnotprobably. It's my friend John's blog about bikes and art and punk and design and shit. I do actually read it. It's good. Not a lot like this but variety is the spice of life right? Besides having the ability to attract people to his site, his actual design skills, his dashing good looks, and his glaring lack of venereal disease he also has some pretty fucking solid taste in music (read: a whole lot of fucking burning witch and Gorgoroth. Side note: please ignore the dubstep and brodownthrowdown mesh short jams...). A minute ago he posted up some Antischism that I had been jamming on recently and never got around to posting. Go the fuck over there and get that shit. It's good. Reaaaaaaal goooood. It's the whole fucking discography for nogods sake.

Prolly's link to some excellent Antischism

Sin Dios - Ruido Anticapitalista & Alerta Antifascista

Keeping on the Spanish theme here's some fucking Sin Dios. This shit just sounds so killer. Early 90's band from Madrid, super anarcho/squatter punks. Sadly no longer around but they have this great vibe where they can alternate from Bad Brains sounding spitfire lyrics to straight up old school hardcore 1212 to some sort of whack eletro piano ska to early 90's crust/d-beat.

If you have any more decent info on Sin Dios or Ruidosa Inmundicia lemme know and I'll add it in.

Sin Dios - Ruido Anticapitalista & Alerta Antifascista

Ruidosa Inmundicia - Demo '04

So in the last couple of days I've been on a crazy ass motherfucking spanish hardcore kick. There is some fucking amazing shit out there. Considering that my spanish knowledge is pretty much limited to "Dos Cervezas por favor." it's been pretty difficulut for me to find too much info about these bands other than the fact that they make some kick ass music. This band, Ruidosa Inmundicia (Rubbish noise according to babel fish) is from Austria but sing in Spanish anyways. If you check the reviews section of their site http://ruidosainmundicia.net the first one says they're reminiscent of Los Crudos which is pretty much how I felt.. Anyways, my friend passed me this album and it's newer spanish-language crusty shit. Dig it.

Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraism U.F.O. - Troubadours From Another Heavenly World & Univers Zen Ou De Zéro À Zéro

Ok this ones up as a request for fawn lust. Apparently there are other people in to the weirder side of doom/drone/ambient shit in this world. Anyways, she wanted some crazy ass Japanese psychedelic shit so here it is. Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraism U.F.O.'s albums "Troubadours From Another Heavenly World" & "Univers Zen Ou De Zéro À Zéro."

This shit's difficult to put in to words but it's fucking out there and it's good. Check it out.

New Tracks of the Week Up

Ok so after slacking for a while I'm finally going to start putting the TOTW up as a downloadable zip file. I'm still working on a good way to package that shit that works best for you. If you have any suggestions lemme know. I'd like to preserve each individual song's details though as opposed to just making it a compilation cd thing. Does that make sense? No? Well fuck you, just listen to the goddamn tracks. Sally.

Tracks of the week - 01/19/08

Government Warning - No Way Out EP

Sticking with the timeless kick here's an old one from Virginia's Government Warning. The best 80's hardcore band of the 2000's. I keep coming back to the 2 7"s I picked up when I saw them a few months ago. They're so fucking solid man. Not sure when they're touring but if you get a chance to see them they're killer onstage.

Government Warning - No Way Out EP

Metalian Fucking Rules

Time waits for no man or so they say. Fortunately, Metalian doesn't give a fuck what time it is, they just want to rock. Straight up. If the question is, "Metal?" their answer is, "Fuck yeah eh!" Thank god for Canadian bands who don't need to make excuses for playing the shit out of some NWOBHM/Speed Metal classics. If you haven't seen this band you are missing the fuck out. Go, go now. Go see them. Get them drunk, get drunk with them. It is the way.

Hirax - Raging Violence

When it comes to Thrash, there's just way too many bands. If someone was to compile a complete list of every asshat hesher's thrash band started from 1985-1990 it would probably reach to fucking mars and back or something. That being said, some bands just stand way the fuck out from all the others. Hirax definitely stands way the hell out.

Totally underrated at the time, these dudes slay the craziest übershort hardcore length/speed song with the ridiculous King Diamond ups and downs and the thrashing mad guitar solo action. Oh yeah, their album art fucking kills it. Pushead at his best.

Check this shit out if you're into the fastest thrash ever.

Hirax - Raging Violence

Doom Metal Wet Dreams Come True

Sometimes a musical project comes along that just stops you in your tracks. Sometimes the very idea of the project is just so good, so unreal that you have to stop and pay attention.

If you like Doom, then Shrinebuilder is this band. The hype is so huge for this project for those who listen to this crap that the results had better be fucking monumental.

Basically, Shrinebuilder is Scott Michael Kelly, the singer and guitarist from Neurosis, Dale Crover the Melvins Drummer, Al Cisneros the bassist from Sleep and Om, and Scott "Wino" Weinrich, doom metal god and legend for over 25 years (St. Vitus, the Obsessed, Hidden Hand, Spirit Caravan, Place of Skulls, etc.) getting together to churn out what is bound to be some of the heaviest shit ever laid to track.

Apparently the recording is done and it's off getting mastered somewhere now. I can't wait to hear this shit.

Entombed - Left Hand Path

Aw, now that I took that dig at the Scandis I feel kinda bad. To make up to all of our colder, blonder friends from the north here's some classic Entombed. Yes, I know everyone and their mom has Left Hand Path, but what about their little sisters. That's really what I'm after...

Also, "Carnal Leftovers" is my new favorite punk song.

Entombed - Left Hand Path

The Greatest Flow Chart of All Time

Click to see it all blown up.

The Holy Mountain - Entrails

I picked this up on vinyl the other day. I love the fact that American D-beat mixes it the hell up and throws in some variations sometimes. I mean, I love the scandi's as much as the next guy but every once in a while I wanna hear something just off the d-beaten path... That sucked sorry.

Annihilation Time - II

Metal punk is pretty much the best shit ever. Metal garage punk, even better. I listened to a shit ton of the first album and this one is just solid as hell too. It's like not quite old school hardcore. Not quite heavy metal riffs, not quite old school hard rock garage and not quite straight up punk, but a sick, twisted, vengeful, ugly, wonderful bastard child of all of them straight down to the perfectly fucked up production and constant use of the word "annihilate"!

Thank god somebody in so cal is still channeling that early Black Flag energy into something destructive.

Annihilation Time - II

Metallica being inducted in to the rock'n'roll hall of fame

I just met metallica. They're being inducted in to the r'n'r hall of fame. They like discharge. More to come shortly. Whoa.

Also inducted this year are run d.m.c, jeff beck, wanda jackson, anthony and the imperials, and a bunch of other old motherfuckers that have nothing to do with this blog.

Frankly, this shit is just to get some hits.

Ticket for SXSW for Sale

Sorry for the spam but if anyone is looking for a ticket to South By Southwest my friend is selling hers for $550. Apparently they go for $700 and it'll get you in to all music and panels. Email me, I'll send you more details.

Skeletonwitch - Beyond the Permafrost

So a minute ago I mentioned that I think Skeletonwitch is one of the best fucking thrash bands currently playing. 100% solid, heavy as hell thrash, black/death vox, definitely one of the tightest rhythm sections I've seen in a long time. If you're in the mood to get back to what metal was about before a bunch of goddamn sallies took it back over this should be stop 1. Every song is good, start at the top. Baptized in flames is a good skate jam.

On top of being gnarly musicians, the dudes in the band are about as solid as you can get. If you ever get a chance to see these dudes, talk to em. Down to earth as fuck.

Skeletonwitch - Beyond the Permafrost

Last Tracks of the Week

Tracks of the week from 1/5/09 were
* Vio-Lence - I Profit
* Bongzilla - Stonesphere
* Megadeth - Poison Was the Cure
* Black Flag - My War
* Bathory - The Reaper
* Witchcraft - Leva
* Destruction - Curse the Gods
* Skeletonwitch - Baptized in Flames
* Iron Maiden - Innocent Exile
* Amebix - Chain Reaction

And now for some DOOM

No, not doom metal, Doom. With a capital D. The English band. You know, the fucking amazing one? Who play the crustpunk/hardcore? John Peel liked em. A lot. Spot fucking on if you ask me. Here's as much doom as I could find in a few hours. Enjoy it.

I think I've included all of World Of Shit, Police Bastard, Monarchy Zoo, Fuck Peaceville, Doomed From The Start, DooM vs. CRESS Split 10''. If you find any mistakes lemme know and I'll try to fix it up for you. It's a lot of shit for me to keep track of.

Doom - World Of Shit, Police Bastard, Monarchy Zoo, Fuck Peaceville, Doomed From The Start, DooM vs. CRESS Split 10''

Sir Lord Baltimore

So back in the late 60's/early 70's when hippies ruled the earth and you could still buy a Sunn amp for cheap, there was a band in Brooklyn called Sir Lord Baltimore. They did not fuck around when it came to rock and roll. The first band ever to be written about as "Heavy Metal" they pretty much sum up the sound of the founding wave metal. It's basically psyched out, fuzzed out, fast, distorted biker rock played by lunatics.

Instead of doing two separate posts I upped their first album "Kingdom Come" and their second S/T album. The riffage on "Hard Rain Fallin'" and the epic of "Man From Manhattan" fucking wreck it.

Sir Lord Baltimore

Atakke/Cannabis Corpse/Skeletonwitch Bangover Extravaganza

Fucking goddamn dude. If you haven't seen these bands, you need to get your shit together and go. Skeletonwitch is possibly the best thrash band around right now. Killer.

Thou - Tyrant

This is probably the heaviest fucking band I saw all last year. Amazing sludge/doom. Perfectly sums up the world of shit that is life after katrina in baton rouge.

Thou - Tyrant

Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power

Another classic. Goddamn, man.

Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power

Stooges - S/T

In honor of Ron Asheton's passing here's the first Stooges album. This shit really needs no introduction. Just go back and think about the fact that this shit was right around the time of the summer of love and all the rest of that hippy crap. God bless Detroit.

The Stooges - S/T

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

R.I.P RON ASHETON - 7/17/48 - 1/1(?)/2009

Apparently the body of Ron Asheton, lead guitarist from the Stooges was found dead in his Ann Arbor house. Date and cause of death is currently unknown. What a total loss for the rock and roll world. Ron was one of the gnarliest axemen out there and probably did more for punk rock playing than just about anyone else out there. We'll miss you man, you were a legend.

R.I.P.

New Tracks of the Week Up

Yeah fuck you, thrash is back motherfuckers.

Last Tracks of the Week

Here's the last set of tracks of the week. I'll have new ones up in a minute

* Motörhead - Overkill
* Electric Wizard - Vinum Sabbathi
* Witchfinder General - Death Penalty
* Big Business - Just As The Day Was Dawning
* Tom and Bootboys - 1234 Fucking Fuck
* Avskum - Fight Back Capitalism
* Discharge - Ain't No Feeble Bastard
* Cock Sparrer - Argy Bargy
* Anthrax - Indians
* Slayer - Piece By Piece

Back With a Vengeance

Well that was a nice break. Got the fuck out of dodge for over a week and stayed far the fuck away from the internet. Basically spent the entire week listening to Megadeth and Suicidal Tendencies. Perfect shit to shred to.

Anyways, if you don't know about last.fm then you're probably a sucker. I've found it way more diverse and on target than Pandora for just throwing something on. Basically you go on, make a stupid little profile thing and then it lets you look around for radio stations. Sadly you can only base a station on a band or a genre and not a song but it's pretty fucking solid with the music it picks. Instead of using "musical characteristics" or some bullshit it uses stuff with similar tags (aka doom metal, sludge, thrash, etc.)

Check that shit out and look me up. My profile is under the name JackCrank.
