Autistic Youth

Sometimes you want to listen to melodic downbeat punk. Not cause you're necessarily bummed out, but sometimes you just want to fulfill your uppage of punx quota of the day.

Yeah, that was fucking awful.

Anyway, this is Autistic Youth. My friend Lisa told me about them when we were hanging out in Austin for Chaos over the summer. She said they were great and I should totally check them out. I'm really glad I did. I'm also really glad that I had the good sense not to pee on Lisa when she passed out in our hotel bathroom, sitting on the toliet with her head resting in the shower curtain. Fuck, people from Portland know how to goddamn party.

AY are doing the throwback to early 80s punk like the Adolescents or their hometown dudes, the Wipers. Check it:

Hellshock - They Wait For You Still

I meant to post this album sometime last year. Yeah well, so much the hell for that. Anyways, here's the latest from Portland stalwarts Hellshock. I feel like every time they put something out it gets progressively bleaker, blacker, and gnarlier. I'm not sure the world can get quite fucked up enough for these guys but goddamn is it good shit. It's funny though, even amidst all the crustiness there are some hints of classic Metallica in there. I'd have to say though, that even though this album seems a little heavier on first listen, I'm not sure if it holds it's own against "Only the Dead." Can't really go wrong with either though.

Perfect jams for the east coast snowpocalypse.

Hellshock - Only The Dead Know The End Of War

Saw these dudes a bunch of months back at the Knitting Factory tap bar with the Estranged and probably Atakke or someone. Shit was fucking awesome. It's been rainy here all fucking day which really puts me in the mood for some "apocalyptic crusty stenchcore" or whatever goofy genre you wanna call these guys. I call it badass Portland hardcore. To the motherfucking Maxxx.

Warning, do not listen if you want to feel warm and fuzzy and shit.

Detestation - Detestation

Speaking of PDX and crust, let's get a little more gender balanced here. Detestation has possibly the gnarliest vocals in all of crust/d-beat. Oh yeah, the bands pretty fuckin' on point too. Tell me I'm wrong fucker. I dare you.

Nanda Devi - Sludgefuckedintheear shit of the day

Yo just found out about this band Nanda Devi outta Portland (wow a doom band from the PNW, who the fuck woulda guessed?). Superheavy sludge with a damn good riff holding it all down. Occasionally gets not-quite "ambient" but definitely has a good solid/on off. If you're into the Eyehategod vox with a little heavier groove check this out.
