Ictus - Imperivm

Blake just turned me onto this fucking epic, in the literal sense of the word, jam. Seriously, clocking in at 39:00 even, this is like the insane Neo-Crust/Black/Thrash Dopesmoker or something. For fans of Alpinist, Black Breath, Masakari, Skeletonwitch, Burning Spirits HC, Tragedy, Martyrdod, with touches of Thou in the middle there etc.

NGNV Wednesday Fuck the World Mix

I haven't posted shit here in forever because fuck it, that's why. So, that's the name of this mixtape. Anyways, all apologies but I was feeling all motorhead d-beat inspired today, which lead me to listening to a bunch of shit that lead me to listening to a bunch of other shit, which lead me to throwing this all together in no particular order.

I got some other shit coming soon, and it'll be big, it's just taking a while. Enjoy.

Alpinist - minus.mensch

The Duggernaut forwarded me this one with the tagline, "You copy their riffs and you don't even know them yet." Frankly, that's good nuff for me. Solid new school crust from Germany. Heavy on the PNW sound without being boring. A nice way to gnar the day.

Acephalix

On rainy days like this, I like to listen to dismal, metallic crust. Acephalix from San Francisco is what I put on this morning, and I'm sharing it with you. Think of a darker Nausea (if that's possible) but I'm sure they're sick of that description because of the call and response female/male vocals that are throughout the album. This band also has members of Poison Idea and Deathcharge, so I'm sure those comparisons are made as well. Anyhow, you should listen to this if you're into metal, hardcore, punk, or trying to dry off after a 5 mile bike ride in a storm.

The Nightmare Begins: An N.G.N.V Mixtape

I've been trying to figure out a way to get this fucking thing posted for like 2 goddamn weeks. Itunes is the digital equivalent of friggin AIDS man. Anyways, HERE IT IS KIDS! THE FIRST EDTION OF THE NGNV COLLECTIVE HIVE MIND MIX TAPE EXTRAORDINAIRE!

That's right, this right here contains what we all think is a pretty decent representation of our (the current authors) musical tastes/stylings/loves/etc. Since the intro and a few posts last week, you've been getting an idea of what's to come. Well, here's another building block. It's all over the damn place but it's a fun one.

Anyways, the premise was, each contributor gets 3-5 songs to introduce their tastes. This is what we all came up with. Click the filed called NGNV.m3u to get it in the right order.

I'm stoked about this.

Buzzov*en @ Public Assembly. Sept. 30th, 2010

The crowd did the masters no justice. How people can stand still in the face of that kind of fury is fucking beyond me. We are unworthy of the gifts we were given.

Fuck that was a good show.

Masakari - "The Profit Feeds" & "Eden Compromised EP"

During the summertime I don't feel like doing fuck all. Especially during this summertime, when the waves have been good, it's been really fucking hot for days on end, I'm moving, was out of town for a shit ton of time, and frankly I'm just fucking lazy.

This band is good enough to awaken the long dormant blogasshole inside of me. You need this album. Especially if your name is Brendan or Junior and you were once in the band Rats in the Walls. Yes, that's right I reference my own (former) bands on my blog. Fuck all y'all.

Right, anyways, Masakari out of Cleveland are the disgusting crusty HHIG 90s political hardcore fiends I have been needing. They're loud, they play d-beats, they have meows, they scream real loud about how fucked up the world is, they write great fucking songs, and they write great fucking songs. Basically, the first thing I thought when I heard this was, "Motherfucking Portland gets all the good shit goddamnit." Then I read that they were from fucking Cleveland and all was made better. If we can get a crust album strong enough to get signed by Souther Lord out of Cleveland, none of us have excuses for why we're not making more awesome punk elsewhere.

This band, named after a Japanese warrior monk battle axe (and not a finnish spelling for massacre or something like I originally thought...) solidly walks the path that His Hero is Gone, Deathside/Burning Spirits bands, From Ashes Rise, etc. carved out before them while somehow never being boring. You can definitely hear why Southern Lord would be interested in them after signing Black Breath as well. They have that "Heavy and Raw yet Produced" sound that we've come to know and love.

Long and Short, put your buttflap back on motherfucker, it's Masakari time.

From Ashes Rise/Victims Split LP

At Rats in the Walls practice Brendan got "Uniforms" stuck in my fucking head and I can't get it the fuck out. Infernal song bastard! Damn you Brendan! It's so fucking good.

If you can get to Montreal on the weekend of the 28th I'm so goddamn jealous of you.

Hellshock - They Wait For You Still

I meant to post this album sometime last year. Yeah well, so much the hell for that. Anyways, here's the latest from Portland stalwarts Hellshock. I feel like every time they put something out it gets progressively bleaker, blacker, and gnarlier. I'm not sure the world can get quite fucked up enough for these guys but goddamn is it good shit. It's funny though, even amidst all the crustiness there are some hints of classic Metallica in there. I'd have to say though, that even though this album seems a little heavier on first listen, I'm not sure if it holds it's own against "Only the Dead." Can't really go wrong with either though.

Perfect jams for the east coast snowpocalypse.

Discharge - Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing

In honor of the 300th post yesterday here's one I should have started the blog with. What the fuck was I thinking? I know every other blog in history has posted this shit already but what the hell. It's the best.

Listen to it and understand why every black vest or jacket you've ever seen has Discharge written on it in at least one place.

Hellshock - Only The Dead Know The End Of War

Saw these dudes a bunch of months back at the Knitting Factory tap bar with the Estranged and probably Atakke or someone. Shit was fucking awesome. It's been rainy here all fucking day which really puts me in the mood for some "apocalyptic crusty stenchcore" or whatever goofy genre you wanna call these guys. I call it badass Portland hardcore. To the motherfucking Maxxx.

Warning, do not listen if you want to feel warm and fuzzy and shit.

Saved on a Monday

Holy fucking shit, Mike Ley just sent me the fucking jackpot for a day when I was feeling completely uninspired to do anything but sit around listening to fucking Angel Witch and Church of Misery for the 50th time in 5 days.

Enemy of the Music Business Box Set

Check that shit out. It will seriously totally flip your shit if you're into gross, angry music. I have no idea who this dude is but fuck, the next week of my life is fucking set for music.

Broken up in to 5 sections:

- Crust
- D-Beat
- Anarcho Punk
- Grindcore
- Power Violence/Thrashcore

I should just give up now.

EDIT: Holy fucking shit man, just started listening to this. I am going to have the best week ever. Definitely scope that blog. Unreal, even for gringos.

Tragedy/Morne/Brain Killer/Brainhandle live in Brooklyn 7/12/09

Last Sunday was apparently the last show ever at Studio B in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Now, as an opening line, this may sound all kinds of dramatic and sad and shit but really, who gives a fuck. Studio B was(/is still? Who knows, this place has been "closing" for over a year now.) usually some shit üntzüntzdiscodancepartyfunkytime club that usually attracts the santorum of Brooklyn (read: coked out Royal Oak rejects and thickneck fake tan Jaegerbombs dudes) that featured the occasional rock/punk show. That being said, due to it's status as like Dubstep discodanceland, they have a fucking annihilator of a sound system featuring like a fucking wall of massive subs. Shit is epic. Anyways, to close they doors I guess they figured they'd go out on the crustiest note they could muster and managed to snag Tragedy for one US date before they head off to Europe for their summer tour.

When I first heard that Tragedy was coming to town I was totally fucking stoked. They are the Amebix of this decade and easily one of the best bands around. Then I remembered the kinda meh last Tragedy show I saw (my first time seeing them...) at the Knit last year some time and was a little hesitant. I mean this show was the first of the tour, that one was one of the last. Either way I was gonna fucking be there, especially with Morne and Brain Killer playing.

I was not let down. At fucking all. Not even a little. Brain Killer, Brainhandle, and especially Morne and Tragedy turned it in to a slaughterhouse. Brain Killer and Brain Handle are both definitely acts to catch. In fact, I'd say that BK at 538 Johnson was easily one of the best house shows I've seen in ages. Morne was way more monstrous/epic/heavy/etcetcetc than I was imagining. Actually kind of reminded me of Amebix in a few ways (you know, more than just the obvious influence on their songs). They had a great balance between slow, doomy parts, and crusty hardcore parts. The sound was excellent and they sounded like the end of the world live. Dual vox/dual guitars approach really laid down the weight.

If you're paying attention, you'll notice that I haven't really mentioned blacklisted. There's a reason for that. That reason is because brocore is fucking lame. Especially when it brings out the thickneck throwdown crew to an otherwise friendly affair. If I had to write a letter it'd prolly look something like this:

"Dear Blacklisted, while your music isn't the worst thing I've ever heard, in fact it occasionally borders on the enjoyable, your fanbase of collarwearing khaki short roundhousing kids, thickneck pound-the-shit-out-of-little-kids-for-no-reason linebackers, and awkward Boston post mall-punks isn't exactly the most enjoyable. Keep up the good work... back in Boston.

Love and Cheek Kisses,
Crank"

Anyways, it all came down to Tragedy at the end of the night. They did not disappoint. Lemme just put it this way. I usually follow the "No crowd-surfing/stage-diving for kids over 175lbs" rule pretty fucking strictly. It definitely makes the show more enjoyable for the majority. For Tragedy, I smashed that rule to fucking pieces for the first time in years. I definitely heard "Not Fucking Fodder", "Call to Arms", "The Day After", and "The Ending Fight". They also played one, possibly 2 new songs as well. Could this mean a new album? Who knows?! Shit dude, for a bunch of semi-drunk dudes they were tighter than Nancy Reagan's asshole and heavier than a 10 ton weight. EURO-FRIENDS: GO SEE TRAGEDY.

Here's some shots from the show. Sorry I don't have more of the FSU dudes trying to bludgeon my friend Matt's Gold lame clad ass. Oh yeah, and sorry I don't have better pics of Tragedy, I was busy losing my shit and going buckwild.
