Aus Rotten - Not One Single Fucking Hit Discography

I'm drowing in crust this week and I fucking love it. Tragedy, Nausea, After the Bombs, Hellshock, and Aus Rotten on fucking repeat. Therefore I feel it necessary to share the Aus Rotten discography today. Pittsburgh's grimiest for 71 fucking minutes straight. Songs from their early 7"s and "The System Works" coupled with some amazing live cuts/covers. You really can't go wrong here. Getting through the whole album in one sitting is fucking abrasive but nobody's making you listen to the whole fucking thing then are they?

If anyone has the album art in a bigger size please let me know?

Detestation - Detestation

Speaking of PDX and crust, let's get a little more gender balanced here. Detestation has possibly the gnarliest vocals in all of crust/d-beat. Oh yeah, the bands pretty fuckin' on point too. Tell me I'm wrong fucker. I dare you.

Tragedy - Vengeance & Nerve Damage

Woke up this morning with an insatiable lust for crust. Tragedy was my fix. I posted the S/T a bunch of months ago so here's the follow-ups. Vengeance and Nerve Damage both bring out two totally different sides of the band. Vengeance is Tragedy at their best (in my opinion). I mean seriously, these dudes are the Nausea/Aus Rotten/Amebix/Discharge of the 00's. Members of basically every amazing crust band of the last 20 years have passed through their ranks or the ranks of their members other/previous bands. For fucks sake, they've even gone on to spawn other "genres" of crust based on whether or not a band sounds like them (see yesterday's posts...). Nerve Damage is definitely an older, bitterer band but one still fucking seething with energy. Todd's voice is definitely gnarlier and grittier and the band throws out such a vibe of relentless disgust and power that you'll have trouble sleeping at night. Get both, start with Vengeance. Most appropriately named record of all time.

July 12th people, July fucking 12th.

Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream

Somehow, in the last week, I've managed to listen to nothing but Cock Sparrer, Black Sabbath, and Saint Vitus non-fucking stop. But, last night while shooting the shit with the dudes from The Skuds and Nuclear Blast Suntan I made the inebriated claim that Entombed's "Left Hand Path" is the greatest of all Swedish Death Metal albums. Chris on the other hand respectfully disagreed with me and insisted that in fact, Dismember "Like and Ever Flowing Stream" was in fact, where it was at. Not exactly being the worlds foremost authority on Swedish Death Metal I figured I should probably just drunkenly call him a motherfucker and insist that I was right anyways in order to preserve my status.

Thank god for drunk music bullshitting because after listening to this album today, I can officially say that I have a new, tied for 1st place favorite Swedish Death Metal album. Fuck yeah dudes, LaEFS is definitely a perfect compliment to LHP. Just a few less speed changes and perhaps a little lower on the sonically mind annihilating parts but on the whole a little more charging and in your fucking face. Shit, a few months ago in the Left Hand Path post I called it m favorite punk album of the year or something. Well this has replaced it. LHP is now one of my 2 top punk albums. So much hardcore/d-beat influence here. It rules.

Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream

Morne - Demo 2008

Things tagged as "Dark crust but not a Tragedy clone" on last.fm are definitely my new favorite genre of the day. That would basically say it all about this band but that would be selling them way short. I mean, violins people. Fuckin violins. Basically it's dudes from Grief (RIP) and Filth of Mankind and friends who obviously listen to a shit ton of Portland/classic "stenchcore" but have a different view on how to play it.

Is it doomy crust? Is it crusty doom? Is it straight crust? Who give's a fuck, it's gonna be amazing live. I am so stoked for this Tragedy show damnit.

EDIT ALERT: The dudes from Morne say "we don't really listen to those portland bands , we are just friends with them." Further proof that I don't know shit about fuck.

Sleep - Volume One

On the flipside of the rampage of Megadeth, here's the first Sleep LP. We got somethin' fer e'rey'un at NGNV. While they hadn't really hit their stride here, Sleep as a 4 man unit with Justin Marler playing just post Asbestosdeath, super Sabbath-inspired sludge/stoner doom. It's cool to hear the forming of the Sleep sound here but don't dismiss it as a just a formative album... Or I'll fuck you up. It's heavy man.

Sleep - Volume One

Megadeth - Rust in Peace

After watching all 11 parts of VH1's behind the music on Megadeth over the last couple of days, I still can still say that Dave Mustaine is a fucking dickhead these days. But, I can also say that Megadeth is one of the best fucking bands in metal. Through Countdown to Extinction, they made some of the best fucking thrash known to man. Stacked up against the other 3 of the big 4, only Slayer comes off as more brutal, more unhinged, and more threatening. Everybody knows that Mustaine was/is basically one of the most fucked up individuals on earth, but fuck me if that dude didn't invent thrash guitar. Period. I guess massive drug consumption and even bigger emotional fuckups really do make for fucking killer metal. Fast as fuck, sloppy as hell, but somehow just tight enough.

I went with Rust in Peace because song for song this Album hits harder than just about any one thrash album besides maybe Reign in Blood. There's a chance that Ride the Lighting can duke it out but with Holy Wars, Tornado of Souls, Poison Was the Cure, Polaris, Hangar 18, etc. I mean fuck, I can pretty much break my neck on everything on there besides 5 magics. Even Dawn Patrol has that completely necessary threat that makes thrash as fucking crucial is it is.

I'm not sure if it was 100% oneupmanship or Mustaine generally hating/fearing the world, or just plain old posturing, but underneath all the cartoon politics this album is definitely a relevant, creepy, menacing chunk of sound. Go put this shit on and skate or something.

This is the coolest thing I have ever seen

Holy fuck man, check this fucking footage out. You can totally see where Iommi lost his fucking fingertips. Also, let's talk about a wall of sonic death to stand in front of. Fuck yeah sabbath. Technically this is before the release of their first album too. Primo shit.

Saint Vitus - Hallow's Victim & The Walking Dead EP

Here's my atonement for not posting up enough doom shit lately. Fucking Vitus man. So good... Maybe I'll post the first album later but for now, "War is Our Destiny" and the Sadist should do you fine. Vitus is the real fucking deal.

Nadja - When I See The Sun Always Shines On TV

See, toldjah there'd be some doom. Here's possibly one of the stranger concepts I've ever heard. Nadja covering A-Ha, Slayer, My Bloody Valentine, Swans, and a whole bunch of others in a bog of droning doom. It's friday and I want to get the fuck off this goddamn machine. Peace.

Bazillion Points Blog + a short apology

So over the last couple of weeks I've been pillaging Ian Christe's Bazillion Points blog for the best fucking demos ever. Like truly rare, impossible to come by, only discovered by the biggest fucking metal dork you've ever met shit. It rules. Go to the Bazillion Points Blog now damnit.

Also, I just wanna apologize for the massive lack of doom lately. I've pretty much been stuck in a downward spiral of nothing but Electric Wizard, Bongzilla and Sleep when it comes to doom for the moment and I can't really get past it at the moment. More doom as soon as I find something else

WHAT THE FUCK?

In the last few days I've heard about this band from a couple of totally unrelated sources. Checked it out on youtube. WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT? I've never been more afraid of furniture in my entire life. Dan Bones, if you're reading this in Berlin, this shit is 100% for you.

G.A.T.E.S. - Total Death

Japanese metal punk Motörhead worship on fucking crates of speed. Amazing shit. Been meaning to post this for fucking ages but just haven't gotten around to it. Mostly because I can't find decent sized cover art. Features 2 members of Church of Misery doing the exact opposite of what they usually do best. If you like Motörhead/Inepsy/Metal Punk this is the shit.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

At every Rats in the Walls show Vic has had to stall in between songs for one reason or another. Every show she tells this joke.

Why do girls wear make up and perfume?

Because they're ugly and they smell.

So in honor of that, today is punk jokes day. Feel free to submit your best ones in the comments section.

- This building in London in the 70's has three floors. One floor is punks, the other floor is hippies, and the last floor is skinheads.

One day the building burns down in a 3 alarm fire

who survives the fire?

skinheads because they were at work.

- So this crusty is sitting outside of Rays on Ave A spanging. Some older dude with nice clothes walks past him and offers him a meal at Odessa, the crusty of course agrees to this and sits down with the older guy. A nice vegan meal and a couple of beers later the dude leans over to the crusty and whispers something.

The crusy reels back in disgust and then punches the dudes fucking lights out and gets up and walks out of the restaurant in a huff. One of the other customers runs out after him in shock asking what the hell could he have possibly said to deserve such an ass kicking?

The crusty responds with, "I dunno man, something about a job."

- How many punks does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

None dickhead, punks only fuck in gutters.

Turisas - Battle Metal

So you know how I have that poll on the side of this thing that says "Gimme some more fuckin...?" And you know how I kinda ignore it most of the time just posting what ever random crap comes in to my head? And you know how it has that one thing that says überdouchey power metal or something? WELL NOW IS THE TIME I ANSWER 10% OF YOUR PRAYERS MOTHERFUCKERS!

Enter TURISAS!

A self described "Battle Metal Band" who toured with Dragonforce in '08. There's a good reason the vikings popularized the rape and pillage technique. It was obviously to give their ancestors some inspiration considering they definitely ain't gettin' laid on their own...

Thanks to Amondisk and Blake Sinclair for this one.

Entombed - Wolverine Blues

In honor of Hesher Parrot here's Wolverine Blues. This album is fucking impossible to stop listening to for me. Death Metal + Rock N' Roll = Death 'n' Roll? What the fuck ever, just put it on and slay your brain. Oh yeah, this is the "Marvel Comics" version, the one with all the goofy movie samples and missing the song "Out of Hand." If you have the more common one send it over, I'll post that too. I just like Hellraiser samples...

MAD SHOWS COMING UP!

So my bands have a shit ton of shows coming up this sunday, next monday, and next tuesday.

FLYERS BY TRON TONGOY AND THE UNDEFEATABLE DAN BONES respectively.

And then on tuesday (no flyer yet) Rats in the Walls is playing Matchless Bar in Brooklyn (corner of Manhattan and Driggs) next tuesday as a benefit for Juliet (the tall lady bartender) who shattered her pelvis and broke and arm and a leg.

The only other confirmed band is God Fires Man who are supposed to be pretty great modern hard rock shit.

3 FOR FUCKING 1 ON DRINKS PEOPLE! 3 FOR FUCKING 1!
They're also raffling off a custom chopped motorcycle, yanks and mets tix, moto gift certificates, other restaurant gift certificates, and some other shit.

There's a $10 cover but the entire cover/half the bar/all the tips are going straight to her. She just got out of the hospital after like 2 weeks. Brutal.

An Interview with Chris Haikus of Sleep & OM... as remembered long after the fact.

During the Sunday of ATP I was lucky enough to grab a drink with the legendary Chris Haikus, drummer of Sleep, AsbestosDeath, and OM. Unlucky for my everything I had to record the conversation was out of batteries at the time so I went in with pen in hand, convinced I'd be able to jot notes down. After about 15 seconds with the guy that plan went to hell so I just went with it and took notes after. Anyways, here's the long and short.

The first thing that comes across when you meet Chris is the phrase, "down to Earth." The dude has that oh-so-rare quality of being chilled out but with it. Cool but not a space case. You can feel this quality radiating from him in not just conversation but in his drumming too. A straight, natural vibe that drives any band he's in without ever letting it drop. The 2nd thing you notice, is that even though he's basically pulled out of the whole touring/recording game the fire's still there. Dude's now 37, has a wife, a 2 year old kid, and a job driving trucks so his priorities are a little shifted but it's not like homie got hooked on skag and lives in a dumpster. Instead of touring he's now pretty into the whole dad/husband thing, more power to him if that makes him happy.

After talking about his actual family and his current state of affairs for a long amount of time things moved in to the obvious discussion of what it was like being back with Matt and Al and playing with Sleep again. The one quote I managed to get down was that, "it feels like no time has passed" since they last played together. According to Chris, even though there have been issues in the past, he, Matt, and Al are all brothers til the end. Fuckin' Al has a Chris tattoo for god's sakes. Even though they never intended to get back together, it just kind of naturally happened (along with a shit ton of nagging from the ATP promoter...). Happily, instead of "sleeping under bridges" and being flat broke, this time they get to play with a little cash in their pockets and a gushing public dying to hear them after a decade of absence started right after the recording of Dopesmoker.

Oh, on that topic, HERE'S THE OFFICIAL DOPESMOKER STORY ACCORDING TO CHRIS:
So apparently Sleep didn't bullshit their label, hide what they were doing and just turn in this 63minute Magnum (d)Opus as a blindside. Apparently they pitched the idea to London Records straight up front that they wanted to do one massive hour long track. The showed the label the layout of the sections on paper, invited the brass to practices, showed them more written layouts (I'd kill to see those man), GOT THE OK and then stepped in to the studio. That's when shit went awry. Apparently it was during the recording stage when London decided that an hour long, uncut, indivisible, paean to a fictitious tribe of ancient, bonged out, religious, nomads descending upon the holy land wasn't such a hot idea... Anyways, long and short, not their fault, sorry for the delay, glad the fans like it. PS: Allmusic is wrong on their take apparently.

From there we got talking about other holy men of note, specifically Justin Marler (who also played with Chris in the Sabians). Justin was the 4th member of Sleep during the Volume One days and replaced Tom Choi when he left AsbestosDeath (which facilitated the name change to Sleep). Apparently, Justin, who couldn't make it to the UK for the reunion, is also doing well and living in Texas(? could be wrong but I know it's some south and west state). And for the record yes he was a monk after he left Sleep but you know... he uhhh got better.

Anyways, I could write about this shit for hours but instead I'm just going to leave it with my favorite anecdote of the conversation, one I think sums up how they played back in the day and a few weeks ago. AsbestosDeath's first show was a high school talent show. Though they were the total crowd favorite (you know, according to Chris), they still came in 3rd place. Apparently the judges, some of whom were employed by the school, didn't take kindly to kids stage diving off the piano...

And that about says it all.

Salome: Album & Interview

So a couple of friends have gushed about this band Salome from VA for a couple of months. Being the slow to react, finger-far-away-the-pulse-of-the-community, lazy bum I am I somehow never got around to checking their stuff out. Fortunately last night I saw them by accident and was blow the fuck away. While I was expecting some sort of heavy death metal kind of vibe (don't ask why, I have no idea) what I got was some soulcrushing, headimploding doom. Just getting set up all you see is a small mountain of very, very high powered amplifiers and a drum kit. Though it sounds big it was pretty sparse. The minute they hit the stage though shit hit the fan. If you ever want to see a neat magic trick, check out Salome as they turn a 5' tall white girl in to a 40' tall black demon from the lowest pits of hell. Fucked if I can figure out where she keeps those pipes. Of course the back drop to this is Aaron on the drums beating that shit like it owes him money and Rob wringing notes out of his axe like David Carradine with a belt.... too soon...

Oh yeah, they're nice guys too. Watch the interview, dl the album, enjoy yerselves.

Laws of Burial comandeer the Woe interview, 6/7/09

Last night Woe played some brutal, crushing, but interesting and solid black metal jams at Public Assembly. Like a bunch of other artists, they're doing a "Pay what you feel our album is worth" policy on their downloads now which I think is fucking great. If you want some classic-to-be black crushing madness check this page out and get everything on it. Pay a lot for it too.

The Neighbors - Ekkert Helvítis Pönk & The Fist Fokkers - Demos of the Night

Here's the two albums by the Fist Fokkers and The Neighbours I said I was gonna post today. I'll throw a little review in tomorrow. Long and short is that they're both pretty awesome, pretty trashy punk rock by some Icelandic dudes. Lots of fun. There were no track listings for the Fist Fokkers sorry dudes.

The Neighbours - Ekkert Helvítis Pönk
