One for the Nutters

Ok seriously, what is the deal with completely fucking mad old rastas. What wonderful creatures they are.

Aura Noir - Hades Rise

So Haunted Castle has been trying to find some inspiration for recording lately and The other day at band practice Thom Skuld threw on some set up music that fucking nailed it. Badass blackened thrash, sorta darkthroney, totally fucking evil. Turns out I've listened to them a bunch with Thom in the past when we were building this speaker cabinet. It's like a nordic supergroup of sweet hesh jams. I wouldn't call it straight early Bathory by any means (way too slow and less hectic than that) but it fucking fits the black thrash/Venom inspiried/Bathory worship/Fenriz included mold like a fucking charm. Perfect for thunderstorms, skating and beer.

Choking Victim - No Gods/No Managers & Leftöver Crack - Mediocre Generica

How in the hell I haven't posted these two is massively beyond me. I must be on the fucking rock or something. Anyways, here's the vast majority of my high school years in the form of two great albums. Choking Victim/Leftöver Crack are a group of fucked up, wonderful, NYC squatter crackheads who make some of the best ska/punk/hardcore hybrid the world has ever seen. Yes, I still love ska, fuck y'all.

This band is also possibly the most tasteless, amusing band in the world to see and has been kicked out of just about every venue in NYC for over a decade. Lets see, off the top of my head I can remember seeing them on 9/10/02 play the knit with 2 6' (possibly 7') tall paper mache twin towers that they sent a bunch of fire crackers in to. No more Knit after that. Then shortly after I remember watching them get the axe from N6th for advertising their live show with Astroland and a bunch of other bands as "featuring big dangerous pyrotechnics." Normally this wouldn't really qualify a band that obviously doesn't have any pyro from a club... unless Great White just created an inferno in some club in NH and the NYFD sees your flier and decides to shut the club down until they can bring it up to code... thus prompting a bunch of highschool skapunkhardcore kids to stand out in the street shouting along to an acapella version of crack rock steady at the cops/fd Oops.

God those shows were fun. Get this.

Anthrax - Spreading the Disease

So, because I can't stop listening to that "box set" and old shit and I don't care about new shit this week at all, here's some good old shit that Dan Bones reminded me of (when he said we, being Haunted Castle, should cover Gung Ho. Which is not something that's ever gonna happen. Sorry dude you ain't Joey Belladonna). Anyways, enough of this grisly, upsetting, crusty shit, it's summer. Time to throw on your jams and drink some brews with the buddies. Aftershock just got me through a long afternoon. This shit makes me wanna skate and whistle at chicks in the park. I know most of you have this one but it's time to revisit NY's own.

Dead Fucking Last

Man I'm always late to the chase. Been listening to some Kaaos, Rattus, and Tampere SS this week. As soon as I go to score some Rattus, motherfucking Enemy of the Music Business already has the whole fucking discography up! Who is this dude? Sonovabitch s/he's good.

Hellshock - Only The Dead Know The End Of War

Saw these dudes a bunch of months back at the Knitting Factory tap bar with the Estranged and probably Atakke or someone. Shit was fucking awesome. It's been rainy here all fucking day which really puts me in the mood for some "apocalyptic crusty stenchcore" or whatever goofy genre you wanna call these guys. I call it badass Portland hardcore. To the motherfucking Maxxx.

Warning, do not listen if you want to feel warm and fuzzy and shit.

Tragedy/Morne/Brain Killer/Brainhandle live in Brooklyn 7/12/09

Last Sunday was apparently the last show ever at Studio B in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Now, as an opening line, this may sound all kinds of dramatic and sad and shit but really, who gives a fuck. Studio B was(/is still? Who knows, this place has been "closing" for over a year now.) usually some shit üntzüntzdiscodancepartyfunkytime club that usually attracts the santorum of Brooklyn (read: coked out Royal Oak rejects and thickneck fake tan Jaegerbombs dudes) that featured the occasional rock/punk show. That being said, due to it's status as like Dubstep discodanceland, they have a fucking annihilator of a sound system featuring like a fucking wall of massive subs. Shit is epic. Anyways, to close they doors I guess they figured they'd go out on the crustiest note they could muster and managed to snag Tragedy for one US date before they head off to Europe for their summer tour.

When I first heard that Tragedy was coming to town I was totally fucking stoked. They are the Amebix of this decade and easily one of the best bands around. Then I remembered the kinda meh last Tragedy show I saw (my first time seeing them...) at the Knit last year some time and was a little hesitant. I mean this show was the first of the tour, that one was one of the last. Either way I was gonna fucking be there, especially with Morne and Brain Killer playing.

I was not let down. At fucking all. Not even a little. Brain Killer, Brainhandle, and especially Morne and Tragedy turned it in to a slaughterhouse. Brain Killer and Brain Handle are both definitely acts to catch. In fact, I'd say that BK at 538 Johnson was easily one of the best house shows I've seen in ages. Morne was way more monstrous/epic/heavy/etcetcetc than I was imagining. Actually kind of reminded me of Amebix in a few ways (you know, more than just the obvious influence on their songs). They had a great balance between slow, doomy parts, and crusty hardcore parts. The sound was excellent and they sounded like the end of the world live. Dual vox/dual guitars approach really laid down the weight.

If you're paying attention, you'll notice that I haven't really mentioned blacklisted. There's a reason for that. That reason is because brocore is fucking lame. Especially when it brings out the thickneck throwdown crew to an otherwise friendly affair. If I had to write a letter it'd prolly look something like this:

"Dear Blacklisted, while your music isn't the worst thing I've ever heard, in fact it occasionally borders on the enjoyable, your fanbase of collarwearing khaki short roundhousing kids, thickneck pound-the-shit-out-of-little-kids-for-no-reason linebackers, and awkward Boston post mall-punks isn't exactly the most enjoyable. Keep up the good work... back in Boston.

Love and Cheek Kisses,
Crank"

Anyways, it all came down to Tragedy at the end of the night. They did not disappoint. Lemme just put it this way. I usually follow the "No crowd-surfing/stage-diving for kids over 175lbs" rule pretty fucking strictly. It definitely makes the show more enjoyable for the majority. For Tragedy, I smashed that rule to fucking pieces for the first time in years. I definitely heard "Not Fucking Fodder", "Call to Arms", "The Day After", and "The Ending Fight". They also played one, possibly 2 new songs as well. Could this mean a new album? Who knows?! Shit dude, for a bunch of semi-drunk dudes they were tighter than Nancy Reagan's asshole and heavier than a 10 ton weight. EURO-FRIENDS: GO SEE TRAGEDY.

Here's some shots from the show. Sorry I don't have more of the FSU dudes trying to bludgeon my friend Matt's Gold lame clad ass. Oh yeah, and sorry I don't have better pics of Tragedy, I was busy losing my shit and going buckwild.

Hellhammer - Apocalyptic Raids & Demon Entrails

Believe it or not, there was a time before Celtic Frost. In this black swirling abyss of history, the forces of evil began to coalesce and would form the roots of basically every single kind of extreme metal everywhere. Of course, the most evil, twisted, and deviant of all of these was a band of three half man, half goat, all foul bastards from the pleasant hills of Switzerland under the name of Hellhammer. Inspired by playing Venom's "In League With Satan" 45 single at 33.3RPM and probably drinking a shit ton, these fuck ups made some of the bestworst deviant mindmelting noisetrash ever to plague our planet. The riffs are the equivalent of a crack baby with with down syndrome, the drums are about on rhythm as high school sex, the bass tone is something akin to a case of ex-lax, and the vocals. Oh god, the vocals. Fucking hell amazing.

Shit dude, this band is easily the best representation of "man it was a time and a place." One of those, "Fuck I wish I'd been in that basement" kind of groups. Anyways, if you want to hear what the band who got famous for literally being "the worst band in metal" yet somehow went on to form one of the most formidable, interesting, bands in hardrock history sounds like get this. Only released on cassette demos, these are the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd demo tapes. A bunch of these (aka Demon Entrails) were re-released last year and sound about 400x better than their 8 generation cassette forefathers.

Shit dude, I don't care who you are, if you can't bang your head to Hellhammer you're a fucking dick.

Diamond Head - Diamond Head EP (AKA the White Album or Lightning to the Nations)

The band that pretty much single-handedly started Metallica and Megadeth. Basically the grandaddies of speed metal. NWOBHM legends Diamond Head fucking killed it with some of the most lasting axe licks of all times. Guess I'm on a NWOBHM kick or something lately, who woulda fucking guessed. Usually I dive in to the skatethrashcrossovercore pretty hard during the sunny months. Gotta keep it classic sometimes.

There's really enough written about this band album that you can do your own damned research in like 3 minutes on google or allmusic. Y'all are big kids and everyone and their mom has heard Metallica's version of "Am I Evil?" Just uh... I dunno listen to the real deal shit and get your Spinal Tap inspiration on.

Church of Misery - Houses of the Unholy

If there was ever a band that made me want to smoke a drugs and kill my neighbors dog it's Church of Misery. I fucking love this band so fucking hard. Worship at the stoner church of riff-death with me friends. Every song on this album is, perhaps not surprisingly considering the subject matter, a fucking killer. Absolutely nothing original about this album, which is just the way I fucking like it when it comes to my stoner doom. Songs about serial killers + a Sir Lord Baltimore cover + fuzz and wah + repetition + screaming = Break your fucking neck with the headbanging massacre fury. What more can you ask for? Seriously. Nothing like CoM to bring out the finest in hyperbole. Fuck I'm havin' a good day.

Amazing New Yob on the Mishka Blog

Go get this album. Mike and co are so on fucking point it hurts. Best guitar sound in the biz, besides sleep that is... right? Seriously one of the most interesting doom albums I've heard in a while. Definitely not the same old recycled crap.

Angel Witch - Angel Witch

Ever since starting Endless Blockades I've seen way too many Angel Witch backpatches. This of course makes me remember that Angel Witch rules every time I see their name. Thus, me posting Angel Witch. You'll have to excuse me for being completely retarded, for some reason the thick coating of malt residue and nitrites that coats my miniscule brain is extra fucking thick today. Seriously, before I had coffee I sounded like Toki fucking Wartooth with down syndrome. It was bad. I haven't really gotten past that. Either way, Angel Witch is like metamucil for the mind during your "slower" more "blocked up" days.

NWOBHM killer shit. Easily some of the best guitar lines of the last 30 years.

And they look great in white...

PS: I'M DOING THIS NEW THING NOW WHERE ALL YOU HAVE TO DO TO GET TO THE DOWNLOAD IS CLICK THE PICTURE AT THE TOP. TRY IT OUT. IT'S FUCKING SWEET. Thanks to Prolly for the knowledge.

Bazillion Points Demo Blog/I have no fucking cred

Ok so I know I've posted about it before but fuck man, the deeper you get in to Ian Christe's demo blog the better your life gets. Like 100%. If I was a lazier sack of shit I'd basically skip out on doing this blog and link to his shit every time he posts something new. But I'm not that guy. But seriously, I've downloaded, and listened to everything on there and it's way better than anything I will ever be able to break here give or take some local touring band demo tapes and possibly that Metalian demo. Crossover, early death metal, speed, thrash, grind, you name it.

Fuck, go right now and download Beyond Possession, Infernal Death, Demonax, Pap Smear, and Noxious. Go. Now. Fucking do it.
