Amenra - Mass III-IIII

Last Sunday Zoroaster came to town with this crazy ass Belgian band Amenra in tow to play a gig at Europa up in Greenpoint. Shit was off the fucking chain. I, Parasite and A Storm of Light opened and the whole night basically blew the fucking doors off the joint. Sadly, I missed I, Parasite (who, though I'm not quite sure how they sound, have some sick artwork) but SOL (featuring the visuals guy from Neurosis and an ex-member of local favorites Tombs) warmed the crowd up on some solid modern Neurosis worship jams. A little cheesy, but definitely heavy.

What really blew my mind though was this band Amenra. Drummer, 2 guitars, bass, singer. I guess the easiest way to describe it is solid no frills contemporary doom in the 00's/post-sleep/EHG vein with definite notes of the repetitive riffy Southern Lord/Om/Stonerdrone sound. Sludgy but not too sludgy vox tie the whole thing together and drop like a fucking anvil. The singer just gets in to this crazy kind of rocking twitch the whole time and just kinda yells at the fucking drummer with his back to the crowd. Nightmareishly loud and massively riffed out I really really recommend you try to catch these guys on their way back around in a few weeks.

Zoroaster was like a giant cloud of the worst fucking trip known to man. Drowned in smoked, lit like fire and brimstone with something like $15,000 worth of amps for 2 dudes they murdered it. So brutally loud I could feel my bowels quaking. If hell has a house band they're probably it. I am stoked as fuck to see them again in Atlanta. For real.

Totalitär - Wallbreaker 1986-1989

After playing a bunch a d-beat last night I thought it might be appropriate to up some classic Totalitär. Here's a collection of their old shit. Put it on and fight the system.

Totalitär - Wallbreaker 1986-1989

Still the Fucking Best

Know what? After all these year's the Ramones are still the greatest band that ever existed.

Torche - Meanderthal

So in honor of going down to ATL here's some Torche. I can't stop listening to this shit as of Tuesday. So fucking good. I'm pretty hit or miss on melodic stuff but when it's good and there's a big fat heavy ass of bass underneath it how the hell can you resist. I would kill a puppy for the guitar tone on the song "Meanderthal". I am definitely stoked to see these guys again. I know people are iffy on their newest album but last time I saw them open for Boris was one of the heaviest shows I've seen.

Torche - Meanderthal

Going to Scion Rock Fest in ATL

So I just dropped more fucking money on a plane ticket than I have to spend just to get down to the Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta. I ain't nevah been to ATL before so I'm going with my friend Victoria to get smashed, see some metal, ride bikes, and fart around for a weekend. If anyone down there is reading this and wants to meet up for a beer or happens to be in some capacity to get me a fucking press pass I'd be much obliged. Anyways, ATL here the fuck I come.

The Wipers - Is This Real? + Alien Boy E.P.

It's sunny and warm out. As you may have figured out my musical mood is often dictated by weather (aka cold and dark = black or doom metal, warm and sunny = the fucking Cardigans or something. Fuck you, I like that band, they cover Sabbath). Anyways, on this warm sunny day I'm diving back in to the classic punk tracks with some Wipers. Their first album "Is This Real?" is the shit. West coast punk sounding like punk should sound, good old fashioned, simple, catchy, driving shit. You really can't argue with it. I'm including the version with the "Alien Boy E.P." attached so you can get a few more choice cuts out of it.

Don't settle for the crappy imitations, the Wipers were the OG Pacific NW shit. So good.

The Wipers - Is this Real? + Alien Boy E.P.

Note: This took over an hour to upload. Fuck that noise.

Seriously, this shit is like the wheelchair basketball of heavy metal.

Zoroaster - Zoroaster

The doom gods must be appeased. I offer forth Zoroaster. Bask in the heaviness. Fairly standard 00's era heavy doom/sludge done extremely well. Lumberingly slow, massively downtuned, heavy heavy heavy. You get the idea. I liked both of their LP's and I'm pretty stoked to see them this weekend at Europa. We'll see how it goes then but as of now I'd say be on the lookout, they're on tour.

Zoroaster - Zoroaster

Candlemass, don't ever change. Ever.

It starts slow but it's worth it, I promise. Especially right around 6:15

New Tracks of the Week Up

New TOTW are up. If you want me to post a downloadable list lemme know. Otherwise I ain't wasting my time for 2 people to grab it (yes, I can track this shit.)

Just comment or somethin'...

Last (two) weeks Tracks of the Week

These lasted 2 weeks cause I'm lazy. Sorry dudes.
* Kylesa - Where the Horizon Unfolds
* Amebix - Axeman
* Metallica - Creeping Death
* Bathory - Dies Irae
* Severed Head of State - Sacrifice
* Toxic Holocaust - Nuke the Cross
* Enewetak - Tragedy
* Dr. Know - Fistfuck (Again, it's just too good)
* Gwar - Fishfuck ('Cause one good turn deserves another)
* T.S.O.L. - Code Blue

Bathory - Bathory

Allmusic.com says of Bathory, "In a musical realm where scale of influence has little to do with commercial success, few originators of the extreme metal arts evoke as deep a sense of mystery, or incite such hushed, reverential tones of admiration, as Sweden's Bathory." They then go on to talk about all thehttp://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=4707391683860816087 other sweet shit that has come out of this band. In general I think their little blurb is pretty on target... cept for that first statement. My point of disagreement comes specifically with the "hushed, reverential tones of admiration" part. I disagree because there is NOTHING FUCKING HUSHED ABOUT MY REVERENTIAL TONES OF ADMIRATION GODDAMNIT. Motherfucking Bathory rules. From the first to the last album this band is the fucking best there was. Easily one of the most influential metal bands of all time, there's just no fucking around with Bathory. 1 dude, a garage and a whole lot of terrifying noise. You just can't get better than that. Brutal, dark, harrowing shit right here.

The first time I put this album on my turntable I almost lost my shit. It's perfect, basement quality recording, side darkness and side evil, pentagrams and the goat, black and white, stark as fuck. This shit almost singlehandedly defined all extreme metal to come (you know, besides that whole mercyful fate/venom thing going on...). Even with the weather warming up a little, there's never a bad time for Bathory.

Kreator - Pleasure to Kill

After listening to a bunch of Dissection lately some Kreator just came on. I always forget just how much the goddamn scandis (in general, not necessarily Dissection. Last thing I need is some crazed Norse satanist sending me crucified rats with threatening notes...) ripped off from the Germans. Don't believe me? Listen to this shit for like 35 seconds.

Kreator - Pleasure to Kill

Dissection - The Somberlain & Storm Of The Light's Bane

So it's really fucking cold in New York right now. Cold like, "Fuck this shit, I ain't getting out of bed goddamnit!" cold. But, despite my lack of wanted to go anywhere or do anything, cold weather is good for a few things. Consumption of wine and heated liquors, trying to get other people to stay in your bed, you know, "for warmth," and most of all motherfucking BLACK METAL!

Dissection was the best fucking black metal bands to come out of Sweden. Jon Nödtveidt and his crew definitely stood out for spanning the wide gap between death and black metal at the time and in the process, made some of the most haunting, heavy shit of the era. Sadly Nödtveidt got involved in some fucked up shit and spent form 1997-2004 in jail for killing a gay man in Gothenburg effectively killing the band. Jon killed himself in 2006 but these first two albums are still timeless extreme metal classics for the eternal winter of life.

Dissection - The Somberlain & Storm Of The Light's Bane

Amebix - Arise! (Plus Two)

Since the Amebix show a bunch of people have told me to post some more up so here it is. Arise! is their first full length (on Alt. Tentacles) put out in 1985. 15 years later in 2000, AT reissued Arise with an aditional 7". It's sweet, you should get it. Anyways, this is the defining album of classic Amebix. Largactyl, Axeman, Arise!, pretty much every song defines what crust should and did sound like (at least the good shit.)

Full Amebix/Kylesa review is up

Hey all, I finally got around to writing about the Amebix show. It's a few posts down but if yer too fucking lazy here's the link.

Amebix Review

Fucking Brilliant

I have no idea who this dude is but seriously, this almost makes me want to do my fucking laundry.

Heavy Metal Laundry Tips Original Post

Heavy Metal Laundry Tips - by Scott Truemetalradio Maxwell

"A friend of mine, a true headbanger of triumphant steel and fellow traveller on the quest of destiny through the vale of evermore (we shall call him "Tim"), once asked me, "Scott, how do you get your metal shirts to stay so black?"

What Tim had astutely observed was that my metal kit maintains its abyssic darkness, despite the scores of metal concerts I have attended where I have moshed, headbanged, sweated, had beer and other substance spilled on me, and in general soiled my shirts in every manner possible, and despite hundreds of hours of agitated hydromatic abuse to purge them of these effects. Years of heavy metal mayhem have not cast the pale light of hope on my wardrobe of doom.

You know what I'm talking about - the guys whose ultra-vintage Slayer shirts are now grey dishrags where the print is barely discernible. At a distance, they might as well be wearing the same wolf shirts and ancient NASCAR merch as their bucktoothed brethren.

But for you, the truly elite metalheads, I am here to bestow the darkest secrets of Laundromancy upon thee. I have consulted tomes of ancient wisdom (i.e., I asked my mom) in preparing this guide. May it serve you well... in darkness:

1) WOOLITE IST KRIEG. Your precious metal shirts are meant to be handwashed, so as to preserve the ink prints and the integrity of the fabric. Woolite is expensive, but it is an investment in your metal cred. In recent years, WOOLITE DARK has been introduced, formulated for dark clothes exclusively. USE IT! Immortal would endorse no less.

2) COLD WASH ONLY. Allow your clothes to soak in waters as cold as the rivers of Blashyrkh itself, without agitation. HAND WASH, or use the "hand washables" cycle on your washing machine. Your precious metal shirts get enough violent agitation when you're wearing them in the mosh pit.

3) NEVER USE FABRIC SOFTENER ON METAL SHIRTS. "Softener" on a metal shirt? Are you kidding? Does the Snuggle bear really look like he knows the difference between Iron Maiden and Iron Angel? Not only should true metalheads welcome and relish Unsoftness, but fabric softener works by expanding the fibers of the fabric, thereby subjecting your battle armor to undue wear and tear. There's time for that later.

4) AIR DRY ONLY. Dryers are false metal. The cold north winds will serve you well. But keep them out of the sun's rays! The sun, as always, is the enemy of darkness.

In conclusion, I would like to address the concerns of those who proudly remark that laundry, showering, and other matters of personal hygiene are NOT "heavy metal." Well, right on, brother, that's hilarious, but will you still be laughing when you die a virgin?"

Enewetak - Onward To Valhalla

The last two days have been busy as shit and annoying and whatnot, sorry about that. All you need to know about this album is that it's heavy as shit. Grinding doom, sludgy as fuck, and gnarly. Oh yeah, the secret song rules. West coast shit from the 90's, these dudes were about as down and dirty as you got back then. Imagine something along the lines of a more grindy Eyehategod descended from Orange County Hardcore instead of the bayou.

Led to the Grave - S/T

I met the guitar player for this band at the Skeletonwitch/Cannabis Corpse show a few weeks back. He threw me the cd and was a generally nice dude (even if he was from MA. We all have our faults.) I just found it in my bag a few days ago and took a listen. Not bad, not bad at all. Good old fashioned thrashy shit played by not old people. Actually, it's pretty fucking catchy. I'll post the album artwork later, I don't got a scanner on me right now.

Led to the Grave

Amebix/Kylesa Review

Holy fuck. That was unreal.

Sorry about the slow day/lack of detail. I'm currently in a world of fucking pain from Tombs/Kylesa and kylesa/amebix back to back + stacking super hard on my bike. Something more substantial will come out of this later.

EDIT: Right so it's later and now that I've had nigh on a week to process what I witnessed I think I can write some more about it. The Atakke/Thought Crime/Kylesa/Amebix show will definitely go down as one of the best shows of the year if not my life. Every aspect of this show came off flawlessly in a show that could have gone so horribly, horribly wrong (read: fat old ex-crusties digging out their old vests and slogging desperately through songs they don't remember to a crowd aghast at the patheticness...)

Anyways, I don't think I've ever been part of a crowd that was more stoked to be at a show in my life. Seeing a room of hundreds of people all in black, mostly denim, mostly covered in patches, all grinning from ear is truly a site to behold. Hell I even saw the dudes in Atakke smiling. It was that good.

I missed Atakke but Though Crime and Kylesa were great as well. It was definitely visible this wasn't any old show for the guys in thought crime. They were totally on top of their game and the sound was fucking killer. Todd looked like a little fucking kid he was so stoked to be onstage with Amebix. Kylesa just looked happy not to be being trampled like they were at the Charleston the night before, accordingly they sounded killer.

When Amebix came out it was madness. Instead of the fat old squatpunks I was expecting it was three, very well preserved, semi-goth looking dudes who had no pretension, brought no bullshit, and threw down nothing but the best. They played fucking everything the crowd wanted to hear, they played it well, and for real it sounded better than on the albums. I've now officially had Axeman and Chain Reaction stuck in my head for a week straight. These dudes know how to put on a show and I sincerely thank Roy Mayorga (who fucking killed it all night on the drums/samples) for convincing them to finally come to the states. Dudes, even the fucking backdrops eye's lit up! How sweet is that shit?

After the show I got to meet Rob and Stig for a minute while they were getting some beers. Two of the nicest guys I've ever shook hands with.

Long story short, it was everything I hoped for and more. Call me a shill or a panderer or whatever, I don't give a fuck, Amebix fucking kills it.

Here's some pics by Ralphy from that night. Ralphy's Pictures Apparently brooklyn vegan also took some.

So my friend Sarah is the one who sent me that moshing germans picture and the metal band name flow chart shot. I've decided (by way of her telling me that I've decided) to give her a weekly photo spot. This week's shot is a response to the previously posted black metal blog post thing.

Fuck damn shit hell am I stoked. If anyone who reads this and doesn't know me is coming lemme know how to find you.

If Kylesa is half as good tonight as they were last night it's going to be one murderous fucking evening.

Kylesa - Kylesa, To Walk a Middle Course, Time Will Fuse Its Worth

Ok since I'm going to attempt to see Kylesa twice, possibly three times this week I figure I should post one album for each attempt. I'm dying to see how the fuck they're gonna fit 2 drumsets and all those amps into the asshole of the death that is the Charleston's basement. This is gonna be fucking hysterial to behold.

Anyways, Kylesa's pretty hard to pinpoint but it roughly falls under the category of super heavy doom/sludge with hardcore/punk influences. Aka it's good old fashioned heavy as fuck metal played by dudes formerly in grindcore bands with 2 drummers and 3 vocalists (2 male 1 female). All bases covered.

Kylesa - Kylesa, To Walk a Middle Course, Time Will Fuse Its Worth

Mmmm... so few hours of waiting

Until this happens tonight

FREE DOOM MP3's & K666 Radio online - HOLY SHIT!

So apparently www.stonerrock.com has a fucking radio station. Being the dim bulb I am I just figured this out yesterday. It's unsurprisingly really fucking good if you're in to stoner rock/doom shit. So far I've seen Karp, Rev. Bizarre, Ufomammut, some really weird Jimi Hendrix, Yob, Fu Manchu, etc. roll across the reels. Check this shit out, it's awesome for the snowy/rainy/gray kinda day we got going on in NYC today.

EDIT UPDATE: Yo check this shit out! They also have a section with like infinity free fucking stoner/doom/sludge mp3's! This shit rules!

Inepsy - R'n'R Babylon

I know everyone and their mom has been hyping this band as the new d-beat Motorhead and how they're so good and shit, so let me just say this one thing. Fuck it, they're all right. Count me officially on the Inepsy bandwagon. This shit rules. It really is some solid Motörhead style crusty rock'n'roll. Oh yeah, and they do a mean fucking cover of the Trooper. Can't really ask for anything more than that can ya?

Hellbastard - Heading For Internal Darkness

The best album from the first self-described crust band out of the UK. Heavy ass old school crust/punk/metal goodness in the vein of a gnarlier Amebix. Thanks to punknotprofit for this one. I've been jonesing for a while.

Goddamn am I stoked for Amebix on Thursday.

Unholy Hell, When Does it End?

HOLY FUCKING SHIT! PENTAGRAM IN NYC!

If you wanna meet me I'll be there. With a Pentagram patch on.

Neurosis - Given To The Rising

This one's for Thomas from the Sleepies (see previous post, probably on 1st page for deviously fucking insidiously catchy album d/l). Last night in the worlds most crowded asshole bar where I came nigh on slaughtering the people in the way of my beer consumption, Thomas and I got to talking about Metal, and how even as someone who has no fucking clue about the first thing about metal he can still get behind the fucking Melvins. I, as someone who enjoys the fuck out of some Melvins got behind that statement and had to back it up by saying that perhaps his first hit was good, but maybe he should up the fucking ante and step in to some Neurosis.

Neurosis is perfect. It's got the hardcore roots that a punk like myself demands and the massive, spinewrenching, skullcrushing, bowel emptying riffage a doom fan desires, and then some weird ambient shit for everyone else. Basically they are fucking unstoppable. Thomas, here's the new album I was telling you about. Give it a shot.

Neurosis - Given to the Rising

To becoming this dude...

Nanda Devi - Sludgefuckedintheear shit of the day

Yo just found out about this band Nanda Devi outta Portland (wow a doom band from the PNW, who the fuck woulda guessed?). Superheavy sludge with a damn good riff holding it all down. Occasionally gets not-quite "ambient" but definitely has a good solid/on off. If you're into the Eyehategod vox with a little heavier groove check this out.

Prollyisnotprobably + Antischism = Fucking Killer

So as you may or may not have noticed, there are some links to other blogs on the right side of this meagre ass looking page. One of those is is Prollyisnotprobably. It's my friend John's blog about bikes and art and punk and design and shit. I do actually read it. It's good. Not a lot like this but variety is the spice of life right? Besides having the ability to attract people to his site, his actual design skills, his dashing good looks, and his glaring lack of venereal disease he also has some pretty fucking solid taste in music (read: a whole lot of fucking burning witch and Gorgoroth. Side note: please ignore the dubstep and brodownthrowdown mesh short jams...). A minute ago he posted up some Antischism that I had been jamming on recently and never got around to posting. Go the fuck over there and get that shit. It's good. Reaaaaaaal goooood. It's the whole fucking discography for nogods sake.

Prolly's link to some excellent Antischism

Sin Dios - Ruido Anticapitalista & Alerta Antifascista

Keeping on the Spanish theme here's some fucking Sin Dios. This shit just sounds so killer. Early 90's band from Madrid, super anarcho/squatter punks. Sadly no longer around but they have this great vibe where they can alternate from Bad Brains sounding spitfire lyrics to straight up old school hardcore 1212 to some sort of whack eletro piano ska to early 90's crust/d-beat.

If you have any more decent info on Sin Dios or Ruidosa Inmundicia lemme know and I'll add it in.

Sin Dios - Ruido Anticapitalista & Alerta Antifascista

Ruidosa Inmundicia - Demo '04

So in the last couple of days I've been on a crazy ass motherfucking spanish hardcore kick. There is some fucking amazing shit out there. Considering that my spanish knowledge is pretty much limited to "Dos Cervezas por favor." it's been pretty difficulut for me to find too much info about these bands other than the fact that they make some kick ass music. This band, Ruidosa Inmundicia (Rubbish noise according to babel fish) is from Austria but sing in Spanish anyways. If you check the reviews section of their site http://ruidosainmundicia.net the first one says they're reminiscent of Los Crudos which is pretty much how I felt.. Anyways, my friend passed me this album and it's newer spanish-language crusty shit. Dig it.

Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraism U.F.O. - Troubadours From Another Heavenly World & Univers Zen Ou De Zéro À Zéro

Ok this ones up as a request for fawn lust. Apparently there are other people in to the weirder side of doom/drone/ambient shit in this world. Anyways, she wanted some crazy ass Japanese psychedelic shit so here it is. Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraism U.F.O.'s albums "Troubadours From Another Heavenly World" & "Univers Zen Ou De Zéro À Zéro."

This shit's difficult to put in to words but it's fucking out there and it's good. Check it out.

New Tracks of the Week Up

Ok so after slacking for a while I'm finally going to start putting the TOTW up as a downloadable zip file. I'm still working on a good way to package that shit that works best for you. If you have any suggestions lemme know. I'd like to preserve each individual song's details though as opposed to just making it a compilation cd thing. Does that make sense? No? Well fuck you, just listen to the goddamn tracks. Sally.

Tracks of the week - 01/19/08

Government Warning - No Way Out EP

Sticking with the timeless kick here's an old one from Virginia's Government Warning. The best 80's hardcore band of the 2000's. I keep coming back to the 2 7"s I picked up when I saw them a few months ago. They're so fucking solid man. Not sure when they're touring but if you get a chance to see them they're killer onstage.

Government Warning - No Way Out EP

Metalian Fucking Rules

Time waits for no man or so they say. Fortunately, Metalian doesn't give a fuck what time it is, they just want to rock. Straight up. If the question is, "Metal?" their answer is, "Fuck yeah eh!" Thank god for Canadian bands who don't need to make excuses for playing the shit out of some NWOBHM/Speed Metal classics. If you haven't seen this band you are missing the fuck out. Go, go now. Go see them. Get them drunk, get drunk with them. It is the way.

Hirax - Raging Violence

When it comes to Thrash, there's just way too many bands. If someone was to compile a complete list of every asshat hesher's thrash band started from 1985-1990 it would probably reach to fucking mars and back or something. That being said, some bands just stand way the fuck out from all the others. Hirax definitely stands way the hell out.

Totally underrated at the time, these dudes slay the craziest übershort hardcore length/speed song with the ridiculous King Diamond ups and downs and the thrashing mad guitar solo action. Oh yeah, their album art fucking kills it. Pushead at his best.

Check this shit out if you're into the fastest thrash ever.

Hirax - Raging Violence

Doom Metal Wet Dreams Come True

Sometimes a musical project comes along that just stops you in your tracks. Sometimes the very idea of the project is just so good, so unreal that you have to stop and pay attention.

If you like Doom, then Shrinebuilder is this band. The hype is so huge for this project for those who listen to this crap that the results had better be fucking monumental.

Basically, Shrinebuilder is Scott Michael Kelly, the singer and guitarist from Neurosis, Dale Crover the Melvins Drummer, Al Cisneros the bassist from Sleep and Om, and Scott "Wino" Weinrich, doom metal god and legend for over 25 years (St. Vitus, the Obsessed, Hidden Hand, Spirit Caravan, Place of Skulls, etc.) getting together to churn out what is bound to be some of the heaviest shit ever laid to track.

Apparently the recording is done and it's off getting mastered somewhere now. I can't wait to hear this shit.
